Teaching Approach
• Achieved exceptional pass rates at end of semester exams in beginner’s Spanish (1A) and Intermediate Spanish (pre-GCSE Spanish), with 86% achieving grades A-C, with 40% achieving A grades in 2011 at ACS International School • Received high commendation from beginning and advanced Spanish language students, and the Dean of Languages at Surrey University, with many requests from students to continue as their tutor at the end of the academic year Using Differentiation • Worked for five years in a school where English was spoken by a minority of students, having to develop differentiated materials and strategies to help children cope with learning both English and Spanish • Developed extension and differentiated activities for a challenging Year 9 class (ages 13-14), including 1-2-1 tutoring, working with learning support teachers, and introducing computers for children with writing difficulties • Developed highly structured and fun activities for children with learning difficulties, briefing students with clear PowerPoint presentations and then enabling them to present in front of the class in order to boost their confidence • Developed differentiating and highly structure activities for students with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Enhancing the School Curriculum • Led a pilot to introduce compulsory Spanish lessons for students aged 10 and 11 in ACS International, working with colleagues to overcome the major challenge of teaching students who had no previous knowledge of basic grammar • Set up and ran a weekly Mediterranean cooking club in ACS International, advertising the club to parents through letters and posters that attracted 11 students. Also, supported logistics for the riding and climbing clubs • Managed and taught a cohort of 20 students on several 4-day trips to Barcelona, Madrid and Seville, immersing students in the culture and modern language usage, while also managing discipline and logistics • Managed and taught a group of students with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) on several trips outside the school site. Using Formative and Interactive Teaching Methods • Created novel group learning songs and games, such as snakes and ladders, to improve student vocabulary and grammar in an interactive and fun way that enabled the children to support each other’s learning • Introduced formative assessment of vocabulary in weekly classes via computer-based tests, followed up with discussion of the correct answers using contextual examples on the interactive Whiteboard
