Spanish and Portuguese Language Tutor w/ 10 Years Experience and a 4-year Linguistics Degree
My love for teaching comes from having lived in several countries: India, Brazil, Taiwan, Japan, Kuwait, UAE, and I currently live in Long Beach, California. I speak 6 languages, and am fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Konkani, and ASL (American Sign Language). I'm currently in the process of getting my Masters degree in Spanish-language education, and tutoring is a joy for me to have everyday.
I graduated from USC (University of Southern California) with a Bachelors degree in Linguistics, which is the science of language. With this degree, I've learned how to break down language from its very foundation, and this has given me a lot of expertise in teaching English, Spanish and Portuguese to my students. I was previously an interpreter in these three languages as well. I was able to learn HOW to teach a language to a student as well. We studied in-depth the grammar, syntax, sounds and how they all come together to create self-expression. It was a beautiful and extremely beneficial learning experience, for when I teach my students Spanish or Portuguese these days, I can explain the logic of the grammar rules and help them compare it to English so that they remember through relational learning and association.
I've tutored for the past 10 years- students ages 6 - 34. My specialty lies in bringing together not just the language, but all the aspects of language that make it interesting: culture, music, art, dance, history, colloquialism. I deeply believe in personalized learning and as such, tailor each lesson plan for my students interests. For example, I have students who are interested in learning Spanish to be able to travel to South America, and we practice listening comprehension through music and movies, and create projects in which we converse about different countries, meeting new people, asking for help, all the while learning and practicing new vocabulary.
I also have other students who wanted to excel in their Spanish classes, especially as online schooling can be a bit difficult for some.
My teaching style is based in compassion and kindness towards my students' learning process, and I really take into account their whole experience- making sure that Spanish is something fun, and not something they hate showing up for. A lot of my students say that I make "learning fun" and that they feel like they're capable of speaking Spanish because of the nurturing and encouraging environment we create together. I also use the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach to foster a sense of personal relationship with the language and culture.
I enjoy creating curriculum that is personalized to the ways in which my students learning. All my lesson plans are immersive & interactive, and add more depth to the language than the concept itself (for eg: related music, cultures, art, etc.) It is a joy for me to witness my student's process and guide them to reach their own "aha" moments.
I am flexible and can easy adapt to my student's schedule :)
I'm available online between 8 am PST and 7 pm PST every day of the week.
