Hey there! I am an English native speaker with a Masters in Education Degree and 8 years of teaching English as a second language experience: 3 years abroad and 5 years domestically.
I have a Masters in Education with a specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) where I conducted research regarding raising third person pronoun language awareness for internationally educated nurses when interacting with 2SLGBTQIA+ patients in Canada . I am also equipped with various certificates such as Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), Canadian Language Benchmarks Bootcamp (CLBs), and a certificate in International Learning.
My specialization is also complimented by an undergraduate degree which I obtained at the University of Alberta as a Double Major in Psychology & Spanish Language and Literature.
My experience started in the year 2013 where I was an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) assistant for a year at two high schools in Spain. I had the honor of being an EFL assistant for another 2 years in Madrid at an Elementary School (2016, 2021).
From 2017 to 2023 (excluding the year 2021), I have been working specifically with Adult newcomers to Canada, raising Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) awareness for the Canadian workplace as well as teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) for cultural, vocational and/or academic purposes.
I value working collaboratively with my students. My work is grounded in person-centered and feminist theories. Most of my students want to live functional lives in Canada, therefore, my approach is often centered around the Canadian standardized CLBs. Via the CLBs, I focus on developing one's communicative language ability in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Grammar and pronunciation are components of language ability and, as such, I focus on it's explicit instruction. Most of the content I use is also task-based OR focused on learning the English language through tasks ranging from "opening a bank account" to "writing a cover letter" or an "academic essay".
My approach is relational. I've been described as warm, genuine, grounded, and playful. I also love to laugh (when appropriate!).
I am available morning and afternoon from 9amEST-12pmEST & 1pmEST-5pmEST.
Sessions will be held online via Microsoft Teams.
