I am a native speaker of both Mandarin and Vietnamese languages. I have a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, a Master's degree in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and a diploma in Montessori Early Childhood Education. I have been teaching different programs and different languages (Mandarin, Vietnamese and English) for more than 10 years in private schools and universities in China and Canada. I also have experience in preparing for the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) examination for all levels and deep knowledge of Chinese culture which adds an extra dynamic to teaching. Now I am the founder and lead teacher of a language school in Toronto.
While completing my bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees, I also had experience in teaching Vietnamese and Chinese to speakers of other languages and preparing for the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) examination for all levels. Most notably, I have taught a wide range of international students with varying linguistic backgrounds at Central China Normal University in a classroom and one-to-one basis for a period of three years.
In addition, I also had hands-on experience in teaching children. While in China, I acted as program director and curriculum coordinator for a private English language school directed toward teaching local elementary school students English.
In addition to the above, I also have hands-on experience teaching Kindergarten, Mandarin and Vietnamese in private schools in Canada for more than 8 years.
Now I am the owner and lead teacher of a language school in Toronto. Through this experience, I utilized my education in second language pedagogy to tailor a structured and rewarding learning experience for students of varying levels (children, youth, adults) and taught groups and individual lessons online and in person. I also have a deep knowledge of Chinese culture and literature which adds an extra dynamic to teaching Mandarin.

Sophie is a fantastic Mandarin teacher for my two sons and myself. I am absolutely blown away by how professional and effective she has been in her lessons (we have been through a few tutors before her). I've been working with Sophie from the very start of my Mandarin speaking journey, and she's been patient, supportive, friendly, and most importantly, extremely effective as a teacher. Our family of 4 has been taking Vietnamese lessons from Sophie and she does a great job of teaching both adults and children. She is a skilled teacher and makes the lessons fun for our children. We would absolutely recommend Sophie as a language tutor.
Phuong has been tutoring my two boys (13 and 7) for the past few months. Their language has most definitely improved and perhaps more importantly, they both enjoy it very much. I've been taking mandarin lessons with Sophie for 2 months now and have already learned so much! She is caring and patient, and loves to come up with funny ways to help me remember Chinese words. She is very knowledgeable about grammar, and I appreciate that her lessons not only emphasize conversation skills, but also reading and writing. She is an experienced teacher who comes prepared to all our classes together. We were looking for a language tutor to improve our daughter’s Mandarin Chinese level. We contacted Sophie through this web page several weeks ago to tutor our daughter. She has been diligent, punctual and made the lesson a fun time that our daughter looks forward to. We provided some material we bought overseas specifically for this purpose which Sophie has supplemented with a series of games and language exercises. There has been a marked improvement in my daughter’s language ability which I have no doubt will continue the longer we work with Sophie.
