Canadian native speaker with a teaching certificate and 11 years of tutoring experience in Turkey
TESOL certificate, 2 years of university, no degree.
I've been teaching in Istanbul, Turkey for the last eleven years, both in a classroom environment and as a private tutor. My private lessons have been mostly conversational. However, I also tutor university students for IETLS and TOEFL exams.
When tutoring one-on-one students I typically start with basic questions and assess their speaking abilities. Depending on the student, I'll give them writing assignments to complete between lessons. I explain to them how writing is a good way to develop their speaking abilities.
When grammar errors occur repetitively, I will focus some time to help them understand this lack in their grammar. Generally, if a student's ability to speak is adequate, I will write down their mistakes as they speak to me. Near the end of our sessions we then review their shortcomings.
When a student has good basic English, I will try to converse with them in better than average English if they have an interest in improving their English on an academic level.
I'm quite flexible these days, except for Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday mornings. Otherwise, I can easily adapt to most students' schedules.
I live in downtown Victoria, BC. So I'm fine with meeting clients anywhere in the downtown area. I typically find a quiet coffee shop for lessons, ones with little music and uncrowded.
Online, I use Zoom and haven't had connection problems. If I do I simply switch to my phone's hotspot.
