Native North American English speaker with 14 years experience teaching ESL. I have a TESL certificate from University of California, in addition to AB and MA degrees. I really enjoy teaching English! I have taught for an institute in San José for 11 years, plus private tutoring, primarily in my home office. These days, almost all teaching is online via Skype or Zoom.
My TESL certificate was a one-year Master's level course in all aspects of teaching English as a Second Language, at a nationally recognized institution, the University of California (Irvine). Prior to that, my career had been in foreign trade development with the US Government.
14 years teaching ESL, 11 of them in Costa Rica. Before that, I taught adult education, and at California State University (San Marcos), and for Bridge Refugee Services, in Knoxville, Tennessee. I also taught a semester of English grammar at Maryville College, in Tennessee.
Usually, it's possible to teach by sharing online resources I've found that provide appropriate structure for intermediate and advanced students. More advanced students, especially in Costa Rica, prefer to engage only in conversational English, and that's fine. In this country, most clients will prefer to pay in colones.
I am flexible, subject to some prior commitments, which fluctuate from time to time.
As a result of Covid, almost all teaching is now done online. With Zoom and Skype, this is usually entirely satisfactory.
