Jamaican native residing in the United States. I am a native speaker of English with over 20 years of international experience, having taught diverse students of various cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In addition, I am a trained Teacher of Spanish. In fact, I hold a Master's of Arts in Spanish from Howard University in Washington, D.C., USA. I am, therefore, competent in teaching English and Spanish to both native and non-native speakers.
In 2003, I completed a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Spanish, with a minor degree in Secondary Education.
In 2005, I completed a Master's degree in Spanish with a certificate in international Relations.
In 1999, I completed a Teaching Associate degree in Secondary Education (English and Spanish major)
I have been teaching for over 20 years. I am a trained teacher who has received robust and rigorous training in the teaching of Spanish and English to native and non-native speakers. Over the years, I have learned that language teaching must be accompanied with the important tools of communication. Students must be able to develop high levels of oral competency in their mastery of the language. Similarly, students need to master the other skills in language learning: listening, reading, writing and culture. By culture, I mean that students must be brought to an awareness of the culture in which the language functions. Thus, a language teacher has a unique opportunity of changing the student´s worldview and knowledge of the language.
Foreign Languages require high and sustained levels of communication rigor. Therefore, the teacher needs to be always cognizant of the four basic language skills – listening, speaking, reading, and writing – and develop these skills as best as possible. In my language classroom, I subscribe to the Communicative Approach; thus, I ensure that my classes are always interactive. By interaction, I mean that all four major linguistics skills are developed simultaneously. This is a challenging and laborious task; however, foreign language teachers ought to be well-equipped with effective pedagogical methods, at all times. He/ She must at all times formulate stimulating activities that will engage students´ cognitive interest in content under study.
Thus, as a passionate foreign-language teacher, I am always looking for creative strategies, depending on student´s background that can be used to stimulate students´ interest. I believe that the teacher has to convince students, based on his mastery of his/her content area that he is highly passionate about the subject. This is surely a great asset in drawing students´ attention to said passion, and thus, will elicit a love for the subject.
