1) Identify areas that the student wants to focus their time on; I try not to teach unnecessary materials
2) search for and assign text readings, generally pdfs (textbooks or other lengthy online resources) with lots of examples and relevance to the student's level of English fluency. These serve as a curriculum and guiding "to do list" to help the student practice the skills identified as lacking in the first step.
3) Reviewing assigned homework, identifying errors, providing hints as to how to answer questions, and requesting that the student re-read text resources when they cannot produce answers reliably. This is intended to show the student that we cannot move forward until they master particular material. My role is to set goals for the student, identify errors they're having, and encourage them to do as much work as possible between lessons.
