Expert, dedicated, amiable English specialist with more than 20 years of experience teaching English language and literature, academic writing, and research skills at universities and more than ten years of experience with online and in-person English coaching and tutoring.
PhD in English, Queen's University, MA in English, University of Toronto, BA in English and Linguistics, University of Toronto
Although I now work mainly as an editor, my approach to editing involves a good deal of online coaching in writing. I have coached mainly university students and older adults. Due to my overseas teaching experience in Kenya (5 years) and Botswana (15 years), I have a knack for working with clients whose first language is not English, helping them improve both their writing and speaking skills. I have also taught university courses in public speaking and oral presentation skills, and for several years at the University of Botswana, I was the student advisor for our English single majors, which involved many in-person sessions advising students on course selection, and essay writing skills. I also ran the university's writers' workshop for about ten tears.
I have always approached teaching as an interactive process in which students are empowered to ask questions, offer opinions, analyse issues, and problem-solve with my assistance. I teach through dialogue rather than lecturing, because experience has taught me that students learn best through dialogues rather than lectures. My style is friendly, positive, and non-judgmental.
I am flexible and can adapt to students' schedules, but I do have preferred days and times, as marked below.
For in-person meetings, I can be available at the Guildford and City Centre branches of Surrey libraries.
