I was born and raised in Ankara, Turkey. I learned English in Navy High School, in Istanbul. I studied Social Sciences in a 4-year college in Ankara (Middle East Technical University). I came to the U.S. in 1988 on a scholarship in philosophy. I did private tutoring in Turkish since 2007. I write nonfiction in both Turkish and English, and do lexicographic work as a hobby, specializing in collocations.
Education / Certificates
I have been a serious reader (regularly taking notes from works of fiction and nonfiction) since junior high school. In Turkey, especially in the late 1970s, there were serious efforts to 'purify' the Turkish language. I obtained and studied from several specialized dictionaries from Turk Dil Kurumu (TDK). I also took a translation course in my college, and did translations between Turkish and English.
Professional Experience
Since 2007, I tutored young people and adults, and assisted a few college students in their graduation work.
Teaching Approach
I am flexible. I strongly advise students to get a good grounding in Turkish grammar. That said, I can provide lists of essential words for 'survival skills'.
